More than just "here"

Books. Movies. Commercials. Television. They all seem to portray the same image of teens: that teenagers are "just here" and their job is to be lazy, gossip-loving, self-centered speed bumps on the road of society. I, for one, hate this picture of teenagers that has been painted by just about everyone.
If we look back in history, there wasn't this "limbo" period of life that we today call "adolescence." You went from a child to a young adult, doing the same work your parents did. This makes me wonder, "What changed things?" From doing a bit of research, I find that the concepts of childhood and adolescence are relatively new, first appearing in the second half of the eighteenth century. Before that point, teenagers dresssed, worked, and were punished just as the adults in society were. Until the 1950's, there was no music aimed specifically at the age group and until well into the twentieth century, at the age of fourteen most teens abandoned formal education for an apprenticeship.
Looks pretty different from today's world, huh? It's tough to imagine most of us wearing suits and ties and working full-time jobs at "such a young age." Luckily, that is no longer what society expects of us and we are "off the hook" in that regard. But what about the rest of the stereotypes placed upon our age group? How much good is it doing us to sit back, be lazy, and completely fulfill society's expectations? None at all. Teenagers have the spirit and capability of impacting and changing society as a whole and doing great things for this country. This is why I urge all teens out there to think about their lives they are living right now. What are they doing to impact society? What can they do to change, better, revamp, or revitalize something in the world around them? I believe that if every one of us took a small step out of the box of being a teenager, society would change their opinions of teenagers. We, after all, are very capable of being "more than just here."

well put taylor, but i actually think the first mention of adolescence was in the bible when they said young man hood and there were many other references of that sort through-out the bible

Kyle plummer said...

i agree with you taylor many people disregard the capabilitys and ideas of teenagers but the funny thing is when we grow up we will probabley think the same things

Joey - Totally agree with you. I just meant that I don't think the modern picture of adolescents was painted until recently. Make any sense?

Kyle - Thanks and I agree as well. Although I do hope that I am not as closed-minded as some adults are. Teenagers are a lot more powerful than I think most realize.

yah i get it but at first i thought you meant adolesence was never used.

Kyle - Lol actually it was kind of scary. I had nowhere else to sit so we ended up there, not knowing it was the "emo table." The Barnish twins sat across from us and they were like, "Well, what do we have here?" lol i wasn't actually scared but it was kind of funny. it was like we had "invaded."

Kyle plummer said...

Deal or No Deal?

The Goverment is in a so called "Major Economical Crisis." There are to many bad stocks making the market swing triple digit defisits in one day. This is caused mostly by the bankers giving out loans to people without checking out their credit report extinsivily, resulting in thiusands of home foreclosers. This for some people spells out a new depression. Some suggest there could be a depression by this monday if the goverment does not act. What is (or at least was) the goverments plan?

Nile- i think it's to long to read you need to make your post fun Nile maybe add a picture and some better font?

Taylor- that is way unfair that you kida got in trouble for that i would have been pissed off

Taylor Yates said...

Nile - Gotta agree with Kyle. Find a political cartoon online to add. That would be a great touch. Also, you might want to check your spelling and grammar errors.

Kyle - Trust me, I kinda was. They made it sound like I was "abusing my priviliges." I was mucho irritated.

Kyle plummer said...

so did they give you any punishment?

Taylor Yates said...

Nope. Just said for us not to post crap on the DM Comets thing. That was about it. Oh and they talked for a while about getting laptops, using email well, how the district saves our emails, etc.

Kyle plummer said...

About the Teenagers thing: Adults totally underestimate teenagers. We are so different than previous generation. Values have shifted and we are throwing preconceived conservative perspectives by the wayside.

so how were your quarter grades plus here is an essay critic at will so i can make it close to perfect it is direct to an audience who has read the scarlet ibis by james hurst before

Period 1
DATE

“Pride is a wonderful, terrible thing a seed that bears two vines, life and death”(pg 318).The theme of the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, portrays a two sided view of pride. One vine showing the positive side of and the other showing the negative part.
The short story follows the narrator and his crippled brother William Armstrong. William becomes the narrators object of pride when he renames him Doodle. “ It was I who renamed him.” (pg 317).Thirsting to be proud of something more than a crippled brother the narrators pride leads him to help Doodle to walk. He expresses this thought when he says, “When Doodle was five years old I was embarrassed of having a brother that couldn't walk”(pg 318).Even though it was impossible for Doodle to walk by the doctor's standards he succeeds. Through this achievement the positive vine of pride bore a savory, appetizing fruit.
The story also shows a terrible aspect of pride. The narrators hunger for pride in his brother goes too far and ultimately ends in death. The narrator wants more from Doodle, He wants Doodle to be normal. He presses his brother when he says “Do you want to be different from everyone else, when you start school?” (321) This statement begins Doodle's new, more rigorous training. Pushed to the limits “Doodle began to look feverish”(321) and became very ill. The narrator realizes his need to be fed by pride has come to an end, and he's not particularly happy with that fact either. He even becomes enraged with anger “The knowledge that Doodle's and my plans had come to naught was bitter and the streak of cruelty within me awakened. By running away from his dependent brother, the narrator took his revenge. The narrator finally returns to Doodle, only to discover the dismal fact that he was dead. Most surely, this is a prime example of the undesirable fruit that the negative vine of pride produces.
The theme of the short story “ The Scarlet Ibis” is truly great. The short story shows how pride has a; good and bad, dark and light, and a positive and negative side. The narrators never ending thirst for “something or someone, to be proud of”( 321 )leads to Doodle having the opportunity to walk. However, it has a second more twisted vine that bears a distasteful fruit, death. Pride defiantly resembles two vines, one containing joy and the other, displeasure.

i corrected small grammar mistakes and then stuff that i wasn't sure on is obviously bolded. Check your tense...you go from "Doodle learns to walk" for example to "Doodle learned to walk." This wasn't in the story but this is an example. Fix your tenses and make them all the same! Otherwise, pretty good work. :-)
